Is sex safe during pregnancy?
ASSOC PROF DITTAKARN BORIBOONHIRUNSARN
I have had to answer this question repeatedly at every maternal class that I have participated in. It shows that sex is one of the most common concerns for couples who are expecting a baby. Nevertheless, most hesitate and feel embarrassed to discuss such personal questions, even with doctors.
Many couples decide to abstain from sex during the pregnancy. This is partly due to misbeliefs and misunderstandings that sex is not allowed at any stage during pregnancy, and can harm both the mother and the baby.
So, is sex safe during pregnancy? The answer is "yes", but not for all couples.
When sex is not safe
Sex has been related to, but does not definitely cause, complications such as miscarriage, premature delivery, bleeding or infections.
However, extreme caution should be taken when the woman is having a difficult pregnancy. Often in such cases, sex is not advised.
A majority of pregnant women are considered low-risk and as long as the pregnancy is normal, the baby will not be hurt.
Will sex be the same?
Maybe not. A woman's sexual desire normally decreases during pregnancy. However, lubrication usually decreases during these months, so there can be some pain during sex. Some women may even feel cramps caused by contractions of the uterus, which is stimulated by orgasms or breast stimulation. But that will be only transient and will not harm the pregnancy.
Sexual activities during this period could be awkward and uncomfortable to both husband and wife due to women's physical changes in size, shape and such.
Proper positions
There is no rule of thumb on how and what is the best choice. Creativity should be the keyword. Couples should explore and experiment on what works best for both.
Several sex positions have been recommended such as sideways, spooning, or the woman on top - all of which will make the woman more comfortable, and also can prevent direct injury to the growing womb.
Will the baby know what's going on?
Some couples actually worry about this. Of course, the answer is "no".
My suggestion is that the couples should ask their doctors to solve all their concerns and unless the doctors advise you otherwise, sex during pregnancy is safe for you and your baby. If abstinence is needed, both of you should work it out together and follow the rule strictly.
